Chapter 13
The dressing mirror Rafe and I had found in one of Angeloâs unused hotel rooms had a rusted frame speckled with patina, but the glass was intact. I didnât much like the look of the raggedy, plain-clothed woman staring back at me. She appeared only a few meals away from the people Iâd left at the bloodfarm.
âDo you know what youâre doing?â Rafeâs reflection sauntered up beside mine. Naturally, he looked exquisite, even with his Average skin on. Not a hair out of place, clothing perfectly pressed and clean. He even smelled of clean linen. Or maybe he seemed more perfect next to my shabby clothing, matted hair, and pale face.
âNot really. I was hoping you could help me some more?â I could trust him. I was certain of that.
âWhy, it cannot be so⦠The great Lynher Aris is too shy to ask for help?â His hand settled on my lower back, warm and comforting. Sex was out of bounds, but thankfully, touching wasnât. Iâd come to enjoy the small, secret brush of his fingers now and then.
My reflection scowled at his. âIt doesnât feel right asking when you canât refuse.â
âDarling.â He leaned in, and his words brushed my neck like butterfly wings. âIâve been maneuvering this curse for years. Donât fret for my wellbeing.â He eased his hand down my back and around my hip. âIf I donât want to do something, youâll be the first to know.â
âVery well.â I cleared my throat. He straightened and backed off, but not before casting me a forlorn look over the things he couldnât have. âIn the station, you wiped a hand over a broken mirror, and we stepped through into what I assume was another realm to find Lilith? Was it Hell, your home?â
âNot exactly⦠but I understand the sentiment. You want to get a look at your overseer?â
âYes. Just to talk to him,â I added hastily. âHe may not be pleased to hear from me.â
âI canât imagine why,â Rafe said, voice dripping with sarcasm. âCould it be because you trapped him in Hell with vicious demons and a whole swathe of vampires that he betrayed? Not pleased may be an understatement.â
âYes, well⦠it seems he tried to save me, at the end, and maybe he wasnât as terrible as Iâd convinced myself he was.â
Rafeâs quizzical expression had me nervously brushing down my tattered clothes. âSome humility?â he asked. âColor me surprised.â
âYes, well, seeâ¦â I stammered. âIâm not sure I would have survived the bloodfarm without him. Heâs still a mass murderer and a horrible person, naturally.â
âNaturally.â Rafe smirked and approached the glass. âLetâs dial home, shall we?â He lifted his hand and glanced at me. âYou can do this.â He took my hand and pressed it to the glass. âYou have a little magic in you. Pull on that thread and cast it forward.â
âI⦠Iâm not sure.â Gerome had always taught us that magic wasnât for humans. That we were too weak to wield it properly.
âTry. Now, use the
